New drivers for 3ware 9750 RAID Controller cards

LSI announced new drivers for 3ware 9750 series RAID controller, which support for Mac OS X, VMware ESX and ESXi 4.0, OpenSolaris and FreeBSD.

the new 3ware cards now include embedded Linux driver support for Linux kernel 2.6.33 and higher, allowing support for many Linux distributions. The extended operating system support is designed to enable white box channel partners to offer the exceptional performance, usability and reliability of LSI 3ware SATA+SAS controllers to a broader customer base, addressing application environments ranging from virtualization and cloud computing to streaming media and data archiving. 
 
Low-profile 3ware RAID controllers feature the LSISAS2108 6Gb/s SAS RAID-on-Chip (ROC) IC and are available in 4- and 8-port configurations. The controllers deliver up to 2.5GB/s in sequential read and 1.7GB/s in sequential write performance, more than doubling the data transfer rates of the previous-generation products. The controllers are designed to easily integrate with existing 3Gb/s SATA and SAS infrastructure, allowing customers to protect current investments while significantly improving read and write performance.

The 3ware 9750 controllers combine 6Gb/s SAS features and performance with the 3ware StreamFusion(TM)+ firmware to address intensive sequential I/O and multi-stream applications commonly found in Linux and Mac environments. Utilizing the Advanced Content Streaming feature included in StreamFusion+, the controllers optimize writes in multi-stream environments by dividing total bandwidth equally among the various streams, minimizing performance bottlenecks. The controllers also boost the speed of streamed data writes, such as video capture and disk-to-disk backup, through improved caching algorithms.

Intel released its 6-Cores CPU: i7-980X Extreme today

The new Core i7-980X Extreme Edition (codenamed "Gulftown") is Intel's first Six-core CPU.

The Core i7-980X has six cores and comes with Intel's Hyper-threading technology. This means it can work on twelve streams at once. 
This is a boon for people that need multi-processing, like graphics professionals transcoding videos, or people doing 3D rendering in software (think CGI). Like previous Core i7 systems, the i7-980X has TurboBoost, which can turn off some of the cores and give that power to the remaining cores (if, for example, your photo editing program can only address two cores). It also can "boost" all six cores above the usual 3.33-GHz specs, as long as the CPU cooler can keep up with the heat output. Intel can do this because it builds a large amount of overhead into its chip design, so that its new standard cooling fan can handle the occasional spike in thermal energy. Needless to say, this on-demand overclocking won't be constant, but most of the time a computer is waiting for you, rather than vice versa.

Another boost in performance is the result of the larger 12MB L3 cache on the processor
